Utah First’s story began way back in 1935 with ten German immigrants living in Salt Lake City. It was a hot summer day in late July when the ten got together and said, “Ich denke wir mussen eine Credit Union eroffnen, weil unsere matratze nicht mehr genug platz hat.”. The ten simply wanted a safe place to put their money and, as no local bank would give them financing, they wanted an institution that would give them the loans they needed to bring their families to America.

So on July 23, 1935, the Utah German American Federal Credit Union was formed with 23 shares totaling $115.00.

Two years later, the credit union changed its name to the Utah C.V. Federal Credit Union. C.V. stands for the German term “Chemnitzer Vereinigung”. “Chemnitz” is a city in the eastern part of Germany and “Vereinigung” means “togetherness” and “community”. At the same time, the Utah C.V. Credit Union lived up to its name by serving all members living in the communities found in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Utah counties.

Over the following years, the credit union began to execute its mission: to build the financial stability of our members through exceptional service, sound financial products, expertise and environment. We did this by providing better rates, better service and total commitment to our members. Something even more unique happened over these same years. Banking Nirvana got its start.

The ten German immigrants that founded this credit union were all about value and equality. They did not like being treated poorly by the big local banks, so they made sure that the credit union was built on real value and that it focus remain solely on building the financial future of all those who passed through its doors. Unlike the banks of 1935, it was never acceptable to tell a member that we could not help them – It is still not acceptable today. We’ll do the deal. We’ll give you exceptional service. Our members deserve our total commitment and they get it. Banking Nirvana was built over the years by taking great care of our members.

On April 1, 1996, the credit union changed its name to Utah First Federal Credit Union to help the people of Utah realize who Banking Nirvana is really for – Utahns.

Banking Nirvana continued to be developed throughout the years, until one day, it hit us. We realized that we had been providing Banking Nirvana in the rough and that it was now time to formally reveal Banking Nirvana to the world.

On July 25, 2006, Utah First revealed Banking Nirvana to the world. So, you may say, what is Banking Nirvana? This is what it’s all about...
